Holland Garden Club, District IV
Members of Holland Garden Club contributed $5,000 and were involved in the planning and participation in Holland in Bloom. The purpose of the organization was to enter the city in the national competition called America in Bloom, 2011. The AIB judges visit each competing city to access tidiness, environmental awareness, community involvement, heritage preservation, urban forestry, landscape areas, floral displays and turf and ground cover. Each section is scored and compared to participating cities in similar population groups as well as all population groups to decide winners. To help the community become aware of HIB and build excitement: Members from our garden club planned and carried out our local Best Spring Yard Awards each week in May and a local contest for the months of June, July and August. All winners received a sign for their yard declaring "This Yard is Bloomin' Beautiful!!", a gift certificate to a local garden shop, invitation to the reception to meet with the national judges and the 3 top winners were presented with a portrait of their garden done by a local artist. America in Bloom officials presented the national awards to the winning cities at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in early October. The Holland Garden Club hosted a reception on October 13, 2011 to celebrate Holland's first place win in our population category, first place over all population groups in tidiness and in the top 5 overall for floral display! Those invited were the HGC, Mayor of Holland, city leaders, Holland in Bloom executive committee members and sub committee members, Holland Horticulture Club members, Master Gardeners, hosts and sponsors. Holland Garden Club members are proud of our city and will continue to promote all the good things the city has to offer!
